spectacular scenery and Ozark hills to enjoy the countless biker-friendly bars,
restaurants, resorts and campgrounds, featuring great food, drinks and live
entertainment. Before you hit the trail, ensure your bike is in tip-top shape
and prepared to carry you for miles of fun. Here, we offer a quick checklist to
safeguard your bike for the road. You’ll appreciate these tips as you prepare
for the long-distance motorcycle trip.
Motorcycle Checklist: Preparing for a Trip
- Check the legal requirement for your number plate and registration sticker. Make sure they are firmly attached and clearly visible.
- Take time to check the entire motorcycle for water, oil or fluid leaks. You should check the radiator and engine hoses for any indication that there is or could be a leak. Manually grab, shake and move various parts of the bike to see that parts haven’t been shaken loose.
- Make sure the brake light comes on before you actually activate the brakes, this is essential in giving drivers behind you plenty of warning when you plan to slow down. This is a good time to check the throttle, brake lever and clutch as well. You want to see a little movement here, but not a lot. If the throttle doesn’t move at all, it may be adjusted too tight.
- Inspect the breaks well, and check the lever tension. When you meet the resistance point, the lever or pedal should not keep moving. If it does, your brake pads may be worn out or there could be a leak. Look at the width and feel of the brake pad. You don’t want to see a ridge, that could indicate they are wearing out. If you have any doubt about your brakes or fluids, take your motorcycle to a mechanic and have them checked by a professional.
- You also want to check the clutch fluid and radiator coolant. Look for signs of leaks. Make sure your gas gauge is in working order and take a look in the tank just to be sure!
- Check the tire pressure, especially when traveling to locations where the temperature may change drastically. Pick up an analogue pressure monitor and reference your bike manual for recommended tire pressure. While you’re addressing the tires, inspect their wear as well.
- Wheel rims and spokes should to be inspected for dents and cracks.
- Turn on headlights, low and high beam. Be sure all indicators are in working order, as well as taillight and brake lights. Start the bike to view battery life and test the horn too!
- It’s a good idea to run your motorcycle for a minute or two, then check the engine oil. This will guarantee an accurate reading.
- Last but not least, clean your mirrors and you should be in good shape for the ride.
