HOW TO PROPERLY CLEAN YOUR MOTORCYCLE HELMET

In order to prepare for long adventures, such as, the Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest this September, you’ve got to prepare and clean your gear.

Having clean gear makes it safer for you to travel. Cleaning dead bugs off your visor and cleaning the inside of your helmet to avoid irritation make a smoother ride for you!

No worries – Bikefest is here to help you navigate through this process!

1. Collect the correct materials

In order to effectively clean the external and internal of your helmet, you’ll need the correct supplies:

Water bucket with warm soapy water
Microfiber cloths
Mesh garment bag
Detail and wax
Q-tip or toothbrush
Carnauba wax

2. Clean the external

Usually, hardened debris ends up on the external of your helmet. To avoid this in the future, right after your next ride, take the microfiber cloth and wet it. Then, lay the cloth over the debris on the helmet for a few minutes to soften up the hardened materials. Take the cloth and start gently scrubbing your helmet until it shines.

If the debris is extra stubborn, use a detail and wax spray to get off the remainder. Most other ingredients are too harsh for your helmet. Avoid using dish soap, chemicals, a window cleaner, etc.

Finally, to get in the nooks and crannies of your helmet, take a q tip or a soft toothbrush and remove dirt from hard-to-get areas. Finish off your cleaning with carnauba wax.

3. Wash your visor

Remove your visor from your helmet and wash separately. You will want to take special care of your visor due to the way it may be manufactured. If you have an anti-fogging visor, washing it with harsh chemicals will deteriorate the coating.

Get warm water and mild soap on your hands and start gently washing your visor with your fingers. Use a soft touch while doing so. Then, rinse the visor with warm water and dry with a microfiber towel.

4. Revive your interior helmet

If you can remove the interior portion of your helmet, do so. If not, you will have to clean another way.

With a removable interior, you’ll want to put it in a mesh bag and put on a light cycle in your washing machine and let air dry.

However, if you cannot remove the interior, you’ll need to grab that soapy bucket of warm water and remove any interior lining possible, such as, electronics or extra padding. Then, get a microfiber cloth and submerge in the bucket of water to start scrubbing the inside of the helmet. Do this one section at a time. Once you’re done scrubbing with the soapy cloth take a different cloth with warm water only and scrub. All the soap needs to be scrubbed out. Finally, let the interior air dry.

Easy peasy! The helmet cleaning process isn’t as complex as expected. Show up looking fresh and clean (and safe!) with a shiny helmet.

Lake Bikefest cannot wait to see you all with your clean helmets!
