The History of Motorcycles

Where would our world be without motorcycles? I mean, we have major events all across the country devoted to these beauties. In today's Lake Bikefest blog, we take a look at the history of motorcycles. From the first invention of a motorcycle to the formation of the iconic Harley-Davidson brand, this blog takes you back through time to the beginning of something great! The First Motorcycle The first motorcycle of sorts was invented in 1867. Francetown New Hampshire native, Sylvester Howard Roper, created a two-cylinder, steam-powered velocipede. However, it wasn't until 1885 that the first gas-powered motorcycle was invented by German Gottlieb Daimler. Consisting of a single-cylinder internal combustion engine mounted on a wooden frame with iron-banded wooden wheels, it was called the “boneshaker” for its jarring ride. Cruise the Strip on Your Bike at Hot Summer Nights

The Nights are Getting Hotter!  Thousands of spectators from all over Missouri and surrounding states come to Lake of the Ozarks for Hot Summer Nights . On the second Friday of the month, now through September, cruises are held on the historic mile-long Bagnell Dam Strip. Cars, trucks and motorcycles, regardless of make or model, are invited to cruise the Strip. This award-winning event has become one of the largest monthly cruises in Missouri. This family-friendly car and motorcycle show at Lake of the Ozarks has something for everyone – atmosphere, entertainment and shopping – all along the Strip. Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend at Rolling Thunder

Memorial Day is typically spent with family and friends, remembering and honoring those who served in the military. What better way to celebrate this day than at one of the largest biker events in the country? Rolling Thunder, a bike run in Washington D.C., is held each year during Memorial Day Weekend. What is Rolling Thunder? According to its website, “Rolling Thunder Run’s mission is to educate, facilitate, and never forget by means of a demonstration for service members that were abandoned after the Vietnam War. Rolling Thunder has also evolved into a display of patriotism and respect for all who defend our country.” Bothered by the events following the Vietnam War, Vietnam veteran Ray Manzo came to D.C. in 1987 with his idea to organize a motorcycle demonstration to bring attention to the POW/MIA situation.
