7 Safety Tips When You're On the Road

Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest is just around the corner! Summer has so many wonderful activities and reasons to ride you bike, but fall is where the fun is at! In Missouri alone there are over 140,936 bike owners, and that means that when you are out on the road, you are NOT alone! Between other bikers, cars, and semi-trucks, there are a lot of things you'll need to be aware of and watch out for. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you plan trips, or just take your bike out for a joy ride.

1. Ride with people you trust

This seems so obvious, but you want to trust and know the people you are riding with. You can never prepare for every situation when you're riding with others, have fun and be safe.

2. Be Seen

Black and brown are not always your friend, especially when you're riding. In fact, they just aren't in general when you're riding. Bright colors help you to be seen when you're riding and that is a very important part of having a safe ride.

3. Feather your clutch on slower, tighter turns

All clutch or no clutch can lead to tipping your bike when you're making moves like turning into a parking lot, u-turns or following slow moving riders. When you feather your clutch it allows you to have the perfect amount of momentum to make the turn.

4. Be Wary of Semi Trucks

Semi trucks are dangerous for bikes. It's hard to see bikes around the big rigs, and they create wind turbulence. Make sure you pass quickly and safely.

5. Leave room for an escape route

Always be looking ahead and around. Whether you're stopped at a stop sign, riding on the highway, or even turning onto a street, be aware of your surroundings. Always have an escape route planned, because let's face it, we are always the safest to ourselves on the road. People may not see us, or may not be paying attention, a good escape route can make all the difference.

6. Keep a cushion between you and other riders

The more of a cushion you leave, the more time you'll have to prepare. A good recommended distance is at least 20 feet. You never know what can happen; whether something runs into the road, or trash blows off of another vehicle you want to have room to prepare for any reactions.

7. Never Ride Tired

Just don't ride when you're feeling tired. Always know what your limit is and plan stops. You know what your tolerance level is, and unfortunately we like to push our limits. It's a good thing to stop, refresh, stretch and give your brain a break.

These are just a few safety tips that can help you when you're out riding. We can't wait to see you all at Bikefest of the Lake of the Ozarks and we hope you have a safe trip while on your way here.
