8 Tips for Cleaning Your Motorcycle

Lake Bikfest 2016 is less than a month away, and you want to make sure you roll up on the best bike around. Depending on where you're traveling from, you may have a long journey ahead of you. Cleaning your bike not only helps keep it in proper working order, but also makes it look shiny and new. In today's blog we offer several cleaning tips to get your motorcycle ready for the best biker event in the Midwest!

Motorcycle Cleaning Tips

  • Stay away from commercial washing facilities and do it yourself. Make sure you use cleaners specifically designed to clean motorcycles. Be careful of abrasive cleaners or general purpose cleaners as they can damage the paint and/or chrome.
  • Never wash your bike right after a long ride. You want to give the bike time to cool down because you don't want to spray cold water on a hot engine.
  • Avoid washing your motorcycle in the middle of the day or in direct sunlight as it can dry cleaners on the bikes surface before you can rinse them off, which leaves streaks.
  • Wash your motorcycle frequently, but try not to overdo it. You want to remove squashed bugs quickly to avoid blemishes in the paintwork, and frequent washing can also alert you to any issues such as oil or fluid leaks, or loose or damaged parts. However, washing too frequently can displace lubricants from cables and exposed grease points on old engines.
  • Try to avoid pressure washing your motorcycle because it can force water into electrical areas and crevices where it can pool and cause corrosion, or at least degreasing of vital parts. Only use a pressure washer in cases where you need to remove caked-on mud and tough grime.
  • Be sure to have different sponges and cloths for each area of the motorcycle. You don't want to clean grease off the wheels and then use that same sponge to wipe down the seat.
  • Use WD40 to get rid of excess water and to gently remove built-up grease.
  • Be sure to thoroughly dry your bike when you're finished cleaning. Start with a micro-fiber cloth or chamois to wipe it down. Then take it for a slow ride around the block, squeezing the breaks to pump out excess water. Finally, take it for a longer, raster ride to ensure water blows out of deep nooks and crannies. Water stuck in there can cause corrosion.
