Have a SAFE and HAPPY Memorial Day!

Memorial Day is just around the corner, but did you also know that this month is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month? Lake BikeFest did and we’d like you to keep the following safety tips in mind. The roads will be busier than normal due to the holiday. Motorcycle riders and vehicle motorists alike ... please share the road and drive carefully.

About Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

This warmer weather has many bikers excited to go out and ride again, but please stay cautious on the roads. According to the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety (MCRS),
100 percent of the people who died in motorcycle related accidents with automobiles were the motorcycle riders. There’s a 37 percent increase in the likelihood of death, if the rider is not wearing a helmet. Seventy nine percent of  2015 motorcycle crashes resulted in injury or death.

Safety Tips

  • ALWAYS wear a helmet when on a motorcycle. According to the MCRS, Missouri Law requires all motorcycle riders to wear a DOT-compliant helmet.
  • Be aware of your surroundings on the roads, both motorcycle riders and vehicle motorists.
  • Stay focused! Don’t text and drive.
  • Be aware of road hazards and unsafe weather conditions. Good example, a strong gust of wind can move a motorcycle across an entire lane of traffic if the rider isn’t prepared for it.

Interesting Facts about Memorial Day

Did you know that Memorial Day used to be referred to as Decoration Day? According to TIME, to honor the deceased, soldiers would decorate their graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags, hence Decoration Day. Although Memorial Day became its official title in the 1880s, the holiday wouldn’t legally become Memorial Day until 1967.

In 2000, Congress passed a law requiring Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time to remember and honor the fallen. While, this doesn’t seem to be common knowledge, it’s quite interesting and needs to be respected.

AAA projects the 39.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Memorial Day weekend.

With that being stated, we cannot stress enough, share the road. Be mindful of those around you and exercise the precautions stated above. We at Lake BikeFest want everyone to have a FUN, but SAFE Memorial Day weekend and we wish you all the best. From all of us here at Lake BikeFest, Happy Memorial Day!
