Did you know that May is National Motorcycle Awareness month? We here at Lake Bikefest sure did and that is why we are here to help make everyone aware of how important it is to stay alert on the roads for motorcycles. Tragic accidents can happen if you are not paying attention! Here are a few safe driving tips for car drivers who may be driving around motorcycles. Do not forget to CHECK your blind spots.
It can already be hard to see a car in your blind spot, let alone a much smaller motorcycle. This is why it is SO important to ALWAYS check your blind spot when changing lanes. All it takes is one time not remembering for tragedy to strike.
Be mindful of your speed when behind a motorcycle.
Follow the speed limits and avoid speeding, especially around motorcycles as it only takes a few seconds for something to go wrong and your chances of getting into an accident can increase when speeding.
Be aware of the weather.
If it's raining or snowing outside, be mindful of that and slow down for those conditions. Speeding or even going the speed limit at that point could be dangerous.
Do NOT tailgate a motorcycle under ANY circumstances.
It is rude and dangerous to tailgate anyone in the first place, no matter what the circumstances. Tailgating a motorcycle gives you less time to react in the event they make an unexpected move.
Always USE your turn signals when turning.
Using your turn signals when you know you are about to turn allows for others around you to know what you are about to do so they have time to react, whether that be to slow down or move to another lane, etc.
